General Information

DTF, also known as Direct to Film, is a printing technique that has evolved significantly in recent years, and is gradually replacing traditional technologies such as transfer. This technique allows the representation of images or lettering in high-resolution colour, with complex designs and nuances. DTF is very popular in the textile industry for printing clothing. The printing process starts with the customisation of an adhesive film similar to that used in transfer, made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The membrane is customised by digital printing with resistant inks. Once the colours and image have been reproduced on the film, it is covered with a uniform white layer to ensure opacity and colour vibrancy. Next, glue is applied to the membrane to ensure that it adheres perfectly to the surface of the product. The film is then heated in an oven and subsequently placed in the thermo-press over the article. Once this process is finished, the membrane is removed, leaving the design firmly adhered to the fabric.

Customisation and prediction times

This printing technique offers unprecedented photographic quality, with the ability to reproduce detailed designs, intricate graphics and subtle gradients. Thanks to the use of advanced technologies, it enables high quality results in short production times. It is a versatile customisation solution suitable for different materials, resistant to washing, wear and tear over time, and above all, economical compared to other full-colour prints. DTF eliminates the need to create plates or matrices, reducing preparation time. This allows finished products to be produced much faster than with traditional printing techniques. In conclusion, the four main advantages of DTF printers are quality, cost, speed and durability.

Colours and materials

DTF printing can be applied to materials such as cotton, linen, silk, felt, leather and faux leather, nylon, viscose, polyester and so on. Direct to Film enables colour reproduction with an extremely high photographic quality. This allows the reproduction of any type of colour and particular shades

Maximum number of possible colours

DTF printing allows full-colour customisation, so there are no limitations in the application of colours.

Plant and Support Materials

Because it is a digital print, there is no need to create plates or stencils as in traditional customisation. This significantly reduces preparation time and simplifies the printing process. To perform DTF printing, you will need the following items: a printer, an oven, design software, ink, film, powder and a hot press.

Printing and Customisation Costs

DTF is one of the cheapest and fastest prints for medium and short run full-colour representations. Even for printers, although the initial investment in machinery can be high, the long-term production costs are low.

Products suitable for DTF printing

DTF printing is suitable for representation on fabrics such as T-shirts or sweatshirts, it is also suitable for accessories such as bags, hats and scarves. It is also easily adapted for customisation on pillows, tablecloths, towels and more.

Warnings

Direct to Film is generally less suitable for large print runs and mass production of gadgets, as it is quite expensive like all full colour prints and transfers. Unlike other technologies, DTF printers do not use the Pantone colour system. This can make it difficult to accurately reproduce specific colours and meet customer requirements.
